“The Examination” is a rare bookplate etching from the 1894 novel titled, “The Maiden in the Mist” also known as “Anne of Geierstein” by the author Sir Walter Scott. The book was published by John Nimmo and Company and printed at Ballantyne Press, Edinburgh, Scotland. The highly detailed printing is plate-signed by Ricardo de Los Rios (lower right). The artwork has been professionally matted using acid-free materials. The mat dimensions: 20 x 16 inches. The engraving has been kept in a flat-file drawer in a smoke-free adult environment and has the original tissue attached. This is a bright and attractive heavy stock engraving from the 1st edition published in 1894.
Ricardo de Los Rios was born in Spain and studied under Isidore – Alexandre-Augustin Pils at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and worked in Paris for many years. In later years, de Los Rios settled in Madrid where he focused on etching plates for authors and books publishers among the notable names; Cervantes “Don Quixote”, The Novels of Honoré de Balzac and Sir Walter Scott. His artwork continues to be found in the Museo del Prado and the Biblioteca Nacional de Espana.
