“Habit of the wife of a Russian Boor” is a copper-plate engraving published in 1770. This is a bookplate from “A Journey into Siberia made by Order of the King of France” published by  T. Jefferys Geographer to the King A.D. 1770, London. The text below the signature is clearly readable: ‘Habit of the Wife of a Rufsian Boor’ – sepia-tone numerals top right – printed on antique hand-made paper with indented plate marks’ – high quality – no foxing – this exemplar has been well -preserved.

about Journey into Siberia:

Journey into Siberia, made by order of the King of France was published in 1770 and it contains an account of the manners and customs of the Russian people and the present state of their empire. It also includes the natural history and geographical description of the country. This etching is from the first English edition after the first French edition published in Paris in 1768. 

About the author, Jean Baptiste Chappe d’Auteroche:

Jean Bapiste Chappe d’Auteroche still under the age of 30 was chosen by the French Academy of Sciences to travel to Siberia and to observe the 1761 Transit of Venus. Chappe d’Auteroche was a French priest and astronomer whose interesting narrative details his arduous travels through still largely unknown territory.
