Description

Rainbow Sky: An Exquisite Lithograph by Bernard Gantner, 1962

Bernard Gantner’s limited-edition, pencil-signed, and numbered lithograph “Rainbow Sky” showcases his sophisticated art. This 275-piece limited edition depicts a winter landscape with snow-covered ground and dormant trees under a bright sky. Its atmosphere evokes Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poetry. Each 1962 stone-pulled lithograph on premium Rives wove paper has Gantner’s hand signature on the lower right and its unique edition number on the lower left. The artwork is stored in an architectural flat-file drawer in a controlled, smoke-free environment to maintain its quality.

Provenance

Affixed on the verso of this valuable artwork are two Collector’s Guild labels. The main label gives a brief but insightful Bernard Gantner biography. “The Collector’s Guild” label at 185 Madison Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10016 verifies the artwork’s authenticity. The Societe de Vérification de la Nouvelle Gravure Internationale of New York and Paris confirms this piece’s originality as a signed lithograph from a limited edition of 275 and the intentional defacement of the stone after this edition’s completion.

A Glimpse into the Life of Bernard Gantner

Art world luminary Bernard Gantner was born in 1928 in Belfort, Alsace, France. His grandfather, an educator and nature lover, encouraged his prodigious drawing talent from age nine. Gantner was mentored by the Belfort museum curator during World War II, allowing him to study Delacroix, Courbet, and Seurat during the museum’s closure.

After his early years in Belfort, Gantner moved to Paris to study at the School of Fine Arts and absorb the city’s culture. He won the 1961 Critic’s Prize after Claude Roger Mars noticed his talent upon his return. From then on, Gantner’s lithography skills became famous. Over 60 exhibitions worldwide, including Dyansen Galleries, have featured his work. This art community pillar was mourned in 2018.
