Donnay, Auguste (1861-1921)

“Auguste Donnay: The Master of Méry”

Auguste Donnay was a Belgian artist and illustrator. He’s best known for his Art Nouveau style, which was prominent during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Donnay’s works often incorporated elegant lines, organic motifs, and a sense of movement characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement. His poster for the International Ensemble Singing Competition is a testament to his skill in capturing the essence of an event in a visually appealing manner.

“Les Maîtres de l’Affiche”

Translates to “The Masters of the Poster” in English. It was a publication that existed between 1895 and 1900 in Paris and was dedicated to showcasing the best works of the most prominent poster artists of the time.

The publication was a creation of the printer and publisher Jules Chéret, who himself is often referred to as the “father of the modern poster.” “Les Maîtres de l’Affiche” was a subscription service where members received monthly sets of four posters, replicating some of the best contemporary posters in a reduced size. Over its duration, it included a total of 240 posters from artists across Europe and America.

These reproductions showcased the pinnacle of the Art Nouveau style that was in vogue during that period. By doing this, “Les Maîtres de l’Affiche” played a significant role in both celebrating and promoting the art of poster-making and recognizing it as a genuine and impactful form of artistic expression.
Given the significant contributions of artists like Donnay, art fairs and events can play a pivotal role in reintroducing their works to new generations. Artists and art galleries can benefit immensely from showcasing iconic pieces or styles that resonate with the essence of Art Nouveau and other movements. They capture not only the artistry but also the historical and cultural contexts of the times in which they were created.
