Annotation
L’ ETE, is an original plate signed mezzotint engraving from a copper plate designed by Gottlieb Heiss, Augsburg, Germany. Printed upon fine woven laid paper in 1720. Signed by the artist in the plate [common in the 18th century] Gottlieb Heiiss Fil [ius] fecit et exc [udit] A [ugusta], V [indelicorum] It is a finely printed impression with a horizontal crease through the middle as if folded and kept in a book. There is minor water damage along the bottom edge and very slight discoloration.
Although a German printing company they created many works of art for the French art market as seen here and this mezzotint. L’ ETE represents a superb original example of the art market in the early 18th century. The mezzotint presented is in very good condition for its age. The artwork is rather rare and is a great piece for collectors. I acquired the mezzotint from an antique store in Darien, Connecticut in 1999.
about the artist:
Gottlieb Heiss was born in Memmingen, Germany in 1686 and passed away in Augsburg Germany at the age of 56 years old. Heiss specialized in mezzotints. He was the nephew and pupil of Elias Christoph Heiss, in which he learned the mezzotint technique in Augsburg.
