An oil painting of the Moroccan countryside by Winston Churchill is to be sold at auction. In March, the painting thought to be from 1935, could fetch up to half a million pounds at Christie’s. In 1935, Sir Winston first visited Morocco and was influenced by the warmth of its landscape, portrayed in its vibrant colors.
Since it was gifted to the Montgomery family, the landscape painting of hills and a stream has graced the walls of the Montgomery family, meaning this will be the first time it has been offered for sale.
“Sir Winston Churchill’s gift of his painting, Scene at Marrakech, to Field Marshal Montgomery symbolizes the deep respect and friendship that the prime minister held for his general,” said Nick Orchard, head of Modern British Art at Christie’s. The work is one of the best paintings created by Churchill in the 1930s, he was an accomplished artist as well as a celebrated political figure.’
